About the Mulligan Band

Our Band was originally formed as the Dunkley Music Mulligan Band in February 2010 with an advertisement in the Idaho Statesman. We started as a small community band for people who used to play instruments in band and wanted to have a second chance -- “take a Mulligan” in golf terms. Our Band was organized as a community band to give adult musicians a chance to get started again playing their instruments in a band and to provide musical experiences for our community audiences.  We have grown to a complement of approximately 50 - 70 active members who enjoy playing at various venues in the Treasure Valley.  We have musicians of all levels of ability playing in the group.  Many had not touched their instruments for several decades before starting again with the CCMB but it is amazing how the memory of the fingerings persists.  Just like riding a bicycle.  You can learn more about the history of our Band here.

At the end of our Spring 2023 season, our founding conductor, Jim Perkins, retired after 13 years of leading and growing the Mulligan Band.  We honor Jim with a page showing his many accomplishments and honors here.

Beginning with our Fall 2023 season, we had the privilege of having Kelley Smith joining us as our conductor.

Kelley Smith was born and raised in Boise. She graduated from Borah High School (former Mulligan Band Director, Jim Perkins was her band director), and Boise State University. Her main focus was clarinet and at Boise State she developed her percussion skills while being a student there.
After graduating from Boise State, she headed to the University of Oregon where she received her Masters of Music Performance degree.

Kelley became a Board Member for Boise Music Week. She played in the orchestra for the musical productions, and recently became the orchestra director for the productions. She is also the Production Committee Chair the Boise Music Week.

Her mom and dad would be very proud of all of her accomplishments, and becoming the Director of the Mulligan Band would make them smile from ear to ear

You Could Even Join Us

We welcome adult musicians of all skill levels. There are no try-outs.  The only requirements are that you: are over 18 years of age (unless granted an exemption by the Board), are able to read music, and have had experience playing a band instrument, even if that experience was a long time ago.  Our musicians have many fascinating stories about how they developed their skills and ended up joining our band.  The one thing we have in common is that we greatly enjoy rehearsing and making music together.  But more than that, we enjoy performing for an audience.

If you are an adult musician who in the past has learned to play an instrument and read music, and are interested in joining our band, please send an email to ccmulliganband@gmail.com.  Please include your name, your preferred email address, a phone number, a mailing address, the instrument(s) you would like to play, and any other information that you think might be useful for us or questions you might have.

The CCMB operates during a "school year" from September through May.  In order to defray expenses, we all pitch in a little in the form of member dues of $25 per month.  This is generally done as a payment of $100 for the 4 months of the fall "semester" and $125 for the 5 months of the spring "semester."  New people giving this a try are allowed three free consecutive sessions before being asked to pay dues.  Please pay with a check payable to Capital City Mulligan Band.  If you would like to participate in our educational experience but cannot afford it, please let us know.  We value your participation.  Our goal is to give our members the opportunity to improve their musical skills in an enjoyable manner while providing the community with a very positive audience experience.
